The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
A questioner asked concerning a torment about to befall 1 which will inevitably seize the disbelievers. 2 a chastisement from Allah, the Lord of the ascending steps, 3 The angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Wherefore be thou patient with a becoming patience. 5 Surely they think it to be far off, 6 but, We see it as near! 7 On the day when the heaven shall be as molten copper 8 and the mountains shall be like puffs of wool. 9 And no friend will ask of a friend, 10 Though they shall be made to see one another. Fain would the guilty ransom himself from the torment of that Day by his children. 11 his wife, his brother, 12 And his kindred who sheltered him, 13 and all those on earth. 14 But no! There is a raging blaze 15 Plucking out (his being) right to the skull!- 16 It calls out to him who reverted and turned away. 17 and who accumulated wealth without spending it for a good purpose. 18 ۞ Surely man was created fretful, 19 bewailing when evil befalls him, 20 when good visits him, grudging, 21 Except those who pray, 22 [and] who incessantly persevere in their prayer 23 And those in whose wealth exists a recognised right, 24 for the needy and the deprived, 25 And those who believe the Day of Judgement to be true. 26 and go in fear of the punishment of their Lord, 27 Surely no one can be secure from the punishment of his Lord, -- 28 who guard their privates 29 except from their wives and what their right hands own, for these they are not blameworthy. 30 But whoso seeketh more than that, those are they who are transgressors; 31 And those who protect the property entrusted to them, and their agreements. 32 and those who stand by their testimony 33 And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer: 34 These it is who in the gardens [of paradise] shall be honoured! 35
