Dawn (Al-Fajr)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the Dawn, 1 and the ten nights! 2 by the even and the odd, 3 And [by] the night when it passes, 4 Indeed in that there is an oath for a man of sense. 5 Dost thou not consider how thy Lord dealt with (the tribe of) A'ad, 6 (And) the tall giants of Iram? 7 Like whom no one else was born in the cities. 8 And with the Thamud (people), who cut out (huge) rocks in the valley?- 9 And with Pharaoh, firm of might, 10 Who (all) were rebellious (to Allah) in these lands, 11 So they made great mischief therein? 12 So your Lord poured upon them a scourge of punishment. 13 Truly your Lord is ever watchful. 14 So man, whenever his Lord tests him by giving him honour and favours – thereupon he says, “My Lord has honoured me.” 15 But when he tries him and stints for him his provision, then he says, 'My Lord has despised me.' 16 (Since wealth does not necessarily guarantee everlasting happiness) then why do you not show kindness to the orphans, 17 Nor do ye encourage one another to feed the poor!- 18 and you greedily devour the inheritance of the weak, 19 And love wealth with all your heart. 20 Nay! when the earth is made to crumble to pieces, 21 And comes your Lord, and angels row on row, 22 On that day, hell will be brought closer and the human being will come to his senses, but this will be of no avail to him. 23 He will say: "Ah! Would that I had sent forth (good deeds) for (this) my (Future) Life!" 24 But on that Day none will punish as He (Allah) will punish, 25 Nor shall any bind with His bond. 26 [But unto the righteous God will say,] "O thou human being that hast attained to inner peace! 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him], 28 enter, then, together with My [other true] servants 29 And come into My Paradise! 30
