The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
O THOU [in thy solitude] enfolded! 1 stand up, deliver your warning, 2 And your Lord glorify 3 purify your garments; 4 And stay away from idols. 5 And do not through giving seek thyself to gain, 6 And for the sake of your Lord, patiently endure. 7 Then, when the Trumpet is sounded (i.e. its second blowing); 8 it will be a hard day 9 Far from easy for the disbelievers. 10 Leave Me with him whom I created alone, 11 And then granted him resources in abundance. 12 And sons always present by his side, 13 And spread [everything] before him, easing [his life]. 14 and yet, he greedily desires that I give him even more! 15 Never. He is refractory of Our signs. 16 I shall oblige him to (climb a slippery mountain in the Hell-fire called As-Sa'ud, or to) face a severe torment! 17 He reflected and then hatched a scheme. 18 Ruin seize him, how did he hatch a scheme? 19 Again accursed be he, how evilly did he decide! 20 Then he looked round; 21 Then frowned he and scowled. 22 and he turned his back and behaved arrogantly 23 Then he said: naught is this but magic from of old; 24 'this is nothing but mortal speech.' 25 I will cast him into hell. 26 And what can make you know what is Saqar? 27 It neither spares, nor releases, 28 Scorching the skin. 29 Over it are nineteen [angels]. 30 We have appointed only angels to be masters of the Fire, and their number We have appointed only as a trial for the unbelievers, that those who were given the Book may have certainty, and that those who believe may increase in belief, and that those who were given the Book and those who believe may not be in-doubt, and that those in whose hearts there is sickness, and the unbelievers, may say, 'What did God intend by this as a similitude?' So God leads astray whomsoever He will, and He guides whomsoever He will; and none knows the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but a Reminder to mortals. 31
