The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ I swear by this city, Makkah - 1 And you, [O Muhammad], are free of restriction in this city - 2 And by oath of your forefather Ibrahim, and by you – his illustrious son! 3 Verily, We have created man into [a life of] pain, toil and trial. 4 Does he think then that no one has power over him? 5 He shall say: I have wasted much wealth. 6 Does he think that no one has seen him? 7 Did We not make two eyes for him? 8 a tongue, and two lips? 9 And shown him the two highways? 10 But he hath not attempted the Ascent - 11 And what shall make thee understand that which the steep is? 12 It is freeing someone's neck from slavery; 13 Or the giving of food in a day of hunger 14 to an orphan near of kin 15 Or the poor in distress; 16 and to be one of those who believe and urge one another to steadfastness and compassion. 17 These are the people of the right hand. 18 and [as for] those who are bent on denying the truth of Our revelations, they are the people of the left hand, 19 Upon them shall be a Fire that will hem them in. 20
