The people of 'Ad, too, rejected the messengers. 123 when their brother Hood said to them, 'Will you not be godfearing? 124 Surely I am a faithful apostle to you; 125 So fear Allah and obey me. 126 And I ask of you no hire therefor: my hire is but with the Lord of the worlds. 127 Do you build on every height a monument? Vain is it that you do: 128 "And do you get for yourselves palaces (fine buildings) as if you will live therein for ever. 129 And will you [always,] whenever you lay hand [on others,] lay hand [on them] cruelly, without any restraint? 130 So be fearful of God and follow me. 131 "Yea, fear Him Who has bestowed on you freely all that ye know. 132 Provided you with grazing livestock and children 133 and gardens, and springs -- 134 "Truly I fear for you the Penalty of a Great Day." 135 They said, “It is the same for us, whether you advise us or not be of the preachers.” 136 This is not but the custom of the former peoples, 137 We will not be subjected to any chastisement." 138 So they belied him, so We destroyed them. Surely, in that there is a sign; yet most of them do not believe. 139 Surely your Lord is the Mighty One, the Merciful. 140
