The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the sun and its morning brightness, 1 and by the moon as it follows it; 2 and by the day as it reveals its glory 3 and by the night as it envelopes the sun; 4 By the heaven and Him Who builded it, 5 and the earth and all its expanse! 6 and by the soul and by Him Who perfectly proportioned it, 7 And inspired it with the wickedness thereof and the piety thereof, 8 To a happy state shall indeed attain he who causes this [self] to grow in purity, 9 and he who corrupts it is sure to fail. 10 Thamud belied in their exorbitance. 11 when that most hapless wretch from among them rushed forward [to commit his evil deed,] 12 So Allah's apostle said to them (Leave alone) Allah's she-camel, and (give) her (to) drink. 13 But they cried him lies, and hamstrung her, so their Lord crushed them for their sin, and leveled them: 14 for none [of them] had any fear of what might befall them. 15
