A (goodly) number from those of old, 39 And a multitude of those of later time. 40 The Companions of the Left (O Companions of the Left!) 41 In hot wind and boiling water, 42 scalding water and under a shadow of black smoke, 43 Nothing (will there be) to refresh, nor to please: 44 Surely they had lived before in luxury, 45 And were stubborn upon the great sin (of disbelief). 46 and constantly said: 'What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we then be restored to life? 47 And also our forefathers?" 48 Say: "Verily, those of olden times and those of later times 49 Are going to be assembled on the appointed time of a Day Known. 50 and then, verily, O you who have gone astray and called the truth a lie, 51 Will be eating from trees of zaqqum 52 And shall fill therewith your bellies. 53 and drink boiling water on top of that, 54 drink it as the most insatiably thirsty camels drink!" 55 Such will be their entertainment on the Day of Requital! 56 WE who have created you, [O men:] why, then, do you not accept the truth? 57 Then tell Me (about) the human semen that you emit. 58 Do you create a child out of it, or are We its creators? 59 We have decreed Death to be your common lot, and We are not to be frustrated 60 in replacing you with another creation like you, changing you into a form which you do not know. 61 And [since] you are indeed aware of the [miracle of your] coming into being in the first instance - why, then, do you not bethink yourselves [of Us]? 62 Have you considered what you sow? 63 Is it you or We Who make them grow? 64 Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry powder, and ye would be left in wonderment, 65 That, “We have indeed been penalised!” 66 Rather, we have been deprived." 67 And have you seen the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who caused it to descend from the cloud, or is it We Who cause it to descend? 69 If We pleased, We would have made it salty; why do you not then give thanks? 70 And have you seen the fire that you ignite? 71 Have you raised its tree, or We have raised it? 72 We have made it a reminder and provision for the travelers, 73 Wherefore hallow thou the name of thy Lord, the Mighty. 74
