The Stars (Al-Najm)
62 verses, revealed in Mecca after Absoluteness (Al-Ikhlaas) before He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
I swear by the star when it goes down. 1 your companion has neither strayed nor is he misguided, 2 and neither does he speak out of his own desire: 3 It is not but a revelation revealed, 4 He was taught by [an angel] who is mighty in power, 5 [an angel] endowed with surpassing power, who in time manifested himself in his true shape and nature, 6 And he is in the highest part of the horizon. 7 then he drew near, and became close 8 Till he was two bows length off or yet nearer. 9 and revealed to God's servant what he revealed. 10 The heart lied not (in seeing) what it saw. 11 will you, then, contend with him as to what he saw? 12 And assuredly he saw him at another descent. 13 Nigh unto the lote-tree at the boundary. 14 Near it is the Paradise of Abode. 15 when the lote tree was covered in mystic splendour. 16 his eyes did not swerve, nor did they stray 17 Verily he saw one of the greater revelations of his Lord. 18 Have ye thought upon Al-Lat and Al-'Uzza 19 and, another, the third manat? 20 Do sons belong to you and daughters to God? 21 that, lo and behold, is an unfair division! 22 They are but names which you have named, you and your fathers, for which Allah has sent down no authority. They follow but a guess and that which they themselves desire, whereas there has surely come to them the Guidance from their Lord! 23 Does man imagine that whatever he wishes for is right for him? 24 To God belong the End and the Beginning. 25
