A multitude from the ancients. 39 And a (goodly) number from those of later times. 40 And those on the left hand: What of those on the left hand? 41 They will find themselves in scorching wind and scalding water, 42 Under the shadow of thick black smoke 43 Neither cool nor refreshing. 44 They had been affluent before, 45 And they have been persisting in the heinous offence. 46 And they used to say: What! when we die and have become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised? 47 Or our fathers of yore? 48 (Muhammad), say, "All the ancient and later generations 49 Are to be gathered together for the appointment of a known Day." 50 Then you, the erring ones and those that gave the lie to the Truth, 51 Shall surely eat of the tree of Az-Zqqum. 52 filling your bellies, with it 53 Then drink over it of boiling water; 54 lapping it down like thirsty camels.' 55 Such shall be your hospitality on the Day of Recompense. 56 WE who have created you, [O men:] why, then, do you not accept the truth? 57 So what is your opinion regarding the semen you discharge? 58 Is it you who creates it, or are We the Creator? 59 We have incorporated death in your constitution, and We shall not be hindered 60 In that We will change your likenesses and produce you in that [form] which you do not know. 61 And assuredly ye have fully known the first production wherefore heed ye not? 62 Have ye seen that which ye cultivate? 63 is it you that sow it, or are We the Sower? 64 If We so wished, We could have reduced your harvest to rubble, and you would have been left wonder-struck to exclaim: 65 (Saying:) 'We are laden with debts! 66 Indeed, we have been deprived of the fruits of our labour." 67 Have you ever considered the water which you drink? 68 Is it you who sent it down from the clouds or is it We who have sent it down? 69 If We pleased, We would have made it salty; why do you not then give thanks? 70 Have you seen the fire which you kindle? 71 Produce ye the tree thereof, or are We the Producer? 72 It is We who have made it a means to remind [you of Us,] and a comfort for all who are lost and hungry in the wilderness [of their lives]. 73 (Muhammad), glorify your Lord, the Great One. 74
