He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ He frowned and then turned away 1 when the blind came to him. 2 You never know. Perhaps he wanted to purify himself, 3 or he might be mindful and good counsel might avail him. 4 Now as for him who believes himself to be self-sufficient 5 you eagerly attended to him -- 6 And not upon you [is any blame] if he will not be purified. 7 And for him who came to you striving, 8 And whereas he fears, 9 So you leave him, and are engrossed elsewhere! 10 No indeed; it is a Reminder 11 So let whosoever will pay heed to it, 12 upon pages high-honoured, 13 exalted, purified, 14 In the hands of scribes 15 Noble, virtuous. 16 Woe to man! What hath made him reject Allah; 17 From what stuff hath He created him? 18 From a sperm-drop He created him and destined for him; 19 Then the way He made easy. 20 Then causeth him to die, and burieth him; 21 Then, when it is His Will, He will raise him up (again). 22 By no means he performed not that which He had commanded him. 23 Let man look at his food: 24 That We pour down the water, pouring (it) down in abundance, 25 and split the earth, splitting, 26 And We cause therein the grain to grow, 27 And grapes and herbage, 28 and the olive, and the palm, 29 the densely tree'd gardens, 30 and fruits and pastures – 31 Provision for you and your cattle. 32 Then, when there comes As-Sakhkhah (the Day of Resurrection's second blowing of Trumpet), 33 That Day shall a man flee from his own brother, 34 mother, father, 35 And from his wife and his children. 36 For every man, that Day, will be a matter adequate for him. 37 Some faces on that Day shall be beaming with happiness, 38 Laughing and full of joy, 39 And [other] faces, that Day, will have upon them dust. 40 Blackness will cover them: 41 These are they who are unbelievers, the wicked. 42
