Al-Najm 3 of 3
Didst thou (O Muhammad) observe him who turned away, 33 and gives a little, and then grudgingly? 34 Does he [claim to] have knowledge of something that is beyond the reach of human perception, so that he can see [it clearly]? 35 Or has he not been told of what is in the scrolls of Moses, 36 And of Ibrahim (Abraham) who fulfilled (or conveyed) all that (what Allah ordered him to do or convey), 37 Namely, that no bearer of burdens can bear the burden of another; 38 And that there is not for man except that [good] for which he strives 39 and that (the result of) his striving shall soon be seen, 40 whereupon he shall be requited for it with the fullest requital; 41 that all things in the end shall return to God; 42 and that it is He who makes to laugh, and that makes to weep, 43 And that it is He who causes death and gives life 44 And that He creates the two mates - the male and female - 45 From seed when it is emitted. 46 That He hath promised a Second Creation (Raising of the Dead); 47 and that it is He who gives wealth and riches, 48 And that He it is Who is the Lord of Sirius; 49 That it was He who destroyed the 'Ad of old, 50 Thamud, 51 and the people of Noah; they were the most unjust and rebellious people. 52 And He overthrew the Cities of the Plain, 53 So there covered them that which did cover (i.e. torment with stones). 54 Then which of the gifts of thy Lord, (O man,) wilt thou dispute about? 55 This is a warner of the warners of old. 56 The Imminent is near at hand; 57 [although] none but God can unveil it.... 58 Then at this statement do you wonder? 59 And do you laugh instead of weeping, 60 Will you remain proudly heedless? 61 So make obeisance to Allah and serve (Him). ۩ 62

How does the memorization exercise algorithm work? At the lowest level 0, all words are visible. While the highest level 9 hides all words. What about at mid-level, like 3, for example? You might think that the algorithm hides precisely 3 out of every nine words. Not quite! At level 3, each word has a 3 out of 9 chance to hide, and 6 out of 9 to be visible. In other words, it is possible, but highly unlikely, for all words at level 3 to be hidden, or, that all of them to be visible! Also, at mid-levels, and in proportion to the difficulty level, hideouts can be partially incomplete or transparent so that words may be partially visible underneath.
