Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Kaf, Ha, Ya, 'Ayn, Sad. 1 This is an account of the mercy of your Lord to His servant Zechariah 2 When he called to his Lord a private supplication. 3 he prayed: "O my Sustainer! Feeble have become my bones, and my head glistens with grey hair. But never yet, O my Lord, has my prayer unto Thee remained unanswered. 4 And indeed, I fear the successors after me, and my wife has been barren, so give me from Yourself an heir 5 "Who shall inherit me, and inherit (also) the posterity of Ya'qub (Jacob) (inheritance of the religious knowledge and Prophethood, not the wealth, etc.). And make him, my Lord, one with whom You are Well-pleased!". 6 "O Zachariah," (it was) said, "We give you good news of a son by name of John.' To none have We attributed the name before." 7 He submitted, “My Lord – how can I have a son whereas my wife is barren and I have reached infirmity due to old age?” 8 He answered: "So shall it be." Your Lord says: "It is easy for Me," and then added: "For beyond doubt, I created you earlier when you were nothing." 9 He (Zachariah) said: 'Lord, make for me a sign' He replied: 'Your sign is that you shall not speak to people for three nights being without fault' 10 Then he came forth to his people from the sanctuary, and he beckoned unto them. hallow your Lord morning and evening. 11 (We said:) "O John, hold fast to the Book;" and We gave him wisdom right from boyhood, 12 And tenderness from Us and purity, and he was one who guarded (against evil), 13 And dutiful toward his parents. And he was not arrogant, rebellious. 14 And peace is upon him the day he was born, and the day he will taste death, and the day he will be raised alive. 15
