A throng of the ancients 39 and many from the later generations. 40 And those on the left – how (wretched) are those on the left! 41 In fierce hot wind and boiling water, 42 and the shadow of a smoking blaze 43 Neither cool nor refreshing. 44 They had been affluent before, 45 And used to persist in the awful sin. 46 And they used to say: What! when we die and have become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised? 47 (We) and our fore-fathers of yore?” 48 Tell them, (O Prophet): “The earlier ones and the later ones 49 Will all be brought together to the tryst of an appointed day. 50 Then lo! ye, the erring, the deniers, 51 will eat from the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 "Then will ye fill your insides therewith, 53 and will thereupon have to drink [many a draught] of burning despair 54 Lapping it up like female camels raging of thirst with disease." 55 Thus shall they be entertained on the Day of Recompense. 56 We have created you: why then do you not accept the truth? 57 Have you thought about [the semen] that you discharge -- 58 Is it you who creates it, or are We the Creator? 59 We have decreed death to you all, and We are not unable, 60 in replacing you with another creation like you, changing you into a form which you do not know. 61 And certainly you know the first growth, why do you not then mind? 62 Have ye seen that which ye cultivate? 63 Is it you who cultivate it, or is it We Who develop it? 64 If We willed, surely We would make it chaff, so that ye would be left wondering. 65 (Saying): "We are indeed Mughramun (i.e. ruined or lost the money without any profit, or punished by the loss of all that we spend for cultivation, etc.)! The water that you drink. 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds or We? 69 Did We will, We would make it bitter; so why are you not thankful? 70 See ye the Fire which ye kindle? 71 Did you make its tree grow or was it We Who made it grow? 72 We have made it a reminder, and a blessing to the traveler. 73 Glorify, then, (O Prophet), the name of your Great Lord. 74
