The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
Read: In the name of thy Lord Who createth, 1 created man from a clot of congealed blood. 2 Proclaim! And thy Lord is Most Bountiful,- 3 Who taught by the pen, 4 taught man what he did not know. 5 Indeed, surely the human is very insolent 6 That he thinketh himself independent! 7 Verily, to thy Lord is the return (of all). 8 What do you think? Have you seen he who forbids 9 a servant when he prays -- 10 Have you seen if he was upon guidance 11 Or enjoins righteousness? 12 Hast thou seen if he denieth (Allah's guidance) and is froward? 13 Does he not know that God sees? 14 Indeed, if he does not desist, We will seize him by the forelock, 15 by the lying forelock steeped in sin. 16 Then, let him call his assembly, 17 We too shall summon the guards of Hell. 18 Nay, heed him not: But bow down in adoration, and bring thyself the closer (to Allah)! ۩ 19
