The Hijjr Valley (Al-Hijjr)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
۞ ALIF LAM RA. These are the verses of the Book and the perspicuous oration. 1 And it will come to pass that those who are [now] bent on denying this truth will wish that they had surrendered themselves to God [in their life time]. 2 Leave them that they may eat and enjoy themselves and (that) hope may beguile them, for they will soon know. 3 Never a city have We destroyed, but it had a known decree, 4 Neither can a people anticipate its term, nor delay it. 5 They say: "O you to whom the Admonition has been revealed, you are surely crazed. 6 Why dost thou not bring before us angels, if thou art a man of truth? 7 We send not down the angels save with the Fact, and in that case (the disbelievers) would not be tolerated. 8 We have sent down this Exposition, and We will guard it. 9 And indeed We sent Noble Messengers before you, to the former nations. 10 But never came a messenger to them but they mocked him. 11 This is how We make the mocking* enter the hearts of the guilty. (* The acts of disbelief.) 12 They will not believe in it, though they have before them the example of former peoples, 13 And [even] if We opened to them a gate from the heaven and they continued therein to ascend, 14 they would surely have said, "It is only our eyes that are spellbound! Nay, we have been bewitched! 15
