In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Kaf Ha Ya 'Ayn Sad. 1 A mention of the mercy of thy Lord unto His servant Zachariah. 2 when he called upon his Lord in low tones, saying, 3 He said: "Lord! My bones have grown feeble and my head is glistening with age; yet, never have my prayers to You, my Lord, been unfruitful. 4 I fear evil from my kinsmen after I am gone; and my wife is barren, so grant me an heir out of Your special grace, 5 to be my heir and to be the heir [of the blessings] of the House of Jacob; and make him, O my Lord, acceptable to you." 6 'O Zachariah, We give thee good tidings of a boy, whose name is John. No namesake have We given him aforetime.' 7 "How can I have a son, O Lord" he said, "when my wife is barren and I am old and decrepit?" 8 Allah said: even so! Thy Lord saith: it is unto Me easy, whereas surely I created thee afore when thou wast not aught. 9 (Zakariya) said: "O my Lord! give me a Sign." "Thy Sign," was the answer, "Shall be that thou shalt speak to no man for three nights, although thou art not dumb." 10 Thereupon he came out of the sanctuary unto his people and signified to them [by gestures]: "Extol His limitless glory by day and by night!" 11 (We said): 'O John, hold fast to the Book', and We bestowed on him judgment while yet a child 12 And (made him) sympathetic to men as a mercy (or a grant) from Us, and pure from sins [i.e. Yahya (John)] and he was righteous, 13 and cherishing to his parents. Never was he insolent or rebellious. 14 Peace on him the day he was born, and the day he dieth and the day he shall be raised alive! 15
