A (goodly) number from those of old, 39 And a crowd of the later. 40 And those of the left hand, how wretched are those of the left hand! 41 [They will find themselves] in the midst of scorching winds, and burning despair, 42 in the shadow of a smoking blaze, 43 which will neither be cool nor soothing. 44 For that they were wont to be indulged, before that, in wealth (and luxury), 45 But persisted in that greater sin, 46 And they used to say, "When we die and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected? 47 Will our ancient forefathers be resurrected too? 48 Say: "Yea, those of old and those of later times, 49 will be brought together for an appointment on an appointed day. 50 Then you people who had gone astray and rejected the Truth 51 you shall eat (the fruit) of the Tree of Zakkum. 52 and you shall fill therewith your bellies 53 and drink boiling water on top of that, 54 Drinkers even as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 This is their reception on the Day of Justice. 56 We created you, why will you not believe! 57 Have you seen that which you emit? 58 Do you make a human out of it, or is it We Who create? 59 We! it is We Who have decreed death unto you all. And We are not to be outrun. 60 In that We will change your likenesses and produce you in that [form] which you do not know. 61 And certainly you know the first growth, why do you not then mind? 62 And have you seen that [seed] which you sow? 63 Do you give it its increase, or are We the giver? 64 Had We wanted, We could have crushed it to bits and you would have been left to lament, 65 That, “We have indeed been penalised!” 66 nay; we have been undone!” 67 Have you ever considered the water which you drink? 68 Did you send it down from the clouds, or did We send it? 69 Had We wanted, We could have made it salty. Why then do you not give thanks? 70 Have you seen the fire which you kindle? 71 Have you raised its tree, or We have raised it? 72 We, even We, appointed it a memorial and a comfort for the dwellers in the wilderness. 73 So glorify the name of your Lord, the Supreme. 74
