The tribe of Thamud also rejected the messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said to them, "Will you not fear Allah? 142 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 143 so fear you God, and obey you me.' 144 For this I demand no recompense from you; my reward is only with the Lord of the Universe. 145 Will ye be left secure in that which is here before us, 146 in the midst of gardens and fountains, 147 and cornfields and date-palms laden with juicy fruits? 148 And dwellings hewed out of mountains ingeniously? 149 Therefore guard against (the punishment of) Allah and obey me; 150 And do not obey the bidding of the extravagant, 151 and spread mischief in the land rather than set things right." 152 They said, "You are only of those affected by magic. 153 You are only a human being like ourselves. Show us a sign, if you are telling the truth." 154 Salih said: "This is a she-camel. There is a day set for her to drink and there is a day set for you to drink. 155 "Touch her not with harm, lest the Penalty of a Great Day seize you." 156 Yet they hamstrung her, and in the morning they were remorseful, 157 So the chastisement seized them. Surely there is a Sign in this, but most of them would not believe. 158 And most surely your Lord is the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
