The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
One demanding, demanded the chastisement which must befall 1 The Unbelievers, the which there is none to ward off,- 2 from God, the Lord of the Stairways. 3 The angels and Jibreel, ascend towards Him – the punishment will befall on a day which spans fifty thousand years. 4 (Muhammad), exercise patience with no complaints. 5 They see it [the Day of Judgement] to be far off, 6 But We see it [as] near. 7 Upon the day when heaven shall be as molten copper 8 And the mountains will be like flakes of wool, 9 and no bosom friend will enquire about any of his bosom friends 10 Though they shall be made to see one another. Fain would the guilty ransom himself from the torment of that Day by his children. 11 His wife and his brother, 12 And his nearest kindred who shelter him 13 and all those on earth. 14 No! Indeed, it is the Flame [of Hell], 15 tearing away his skin! 16 It shall call him who turneth back and backslideth. 17 and amass [wealth] and thereupon withhold [it from their fellow-men]. 18 ۞ VERILY, man is born with a restless disposition. 19 Fretful when evil befalleth him 20 And when good toucheth him he is begrudging. 21 except those who are steadfast 22 who are constant in prayer; 23 And those in whose wealth there is a fixed portion. 24 For the needy and those dispossessed, 25 who confirm the Day of Reckoning 26 and fear the chastisement of their Lord – 27 surely the chastisement of their Lord is a thing none can feel secure from – 28 And those who guard their chastity (i.e. private parts from illegal sexual acts). 29 Save with their wives and those whom their right hands possess, for thus they are not blameworthy; 30 (but whoso seeks after more than that, they are the transgressors), 31 And those who fulfil their trusts and covenants, 32 Who uphold their testimonies, 33 and are steadfast in their prayers. 34 Those are highly honored in the Gardens. 35
