The Night (Al-Layl)
21 verses, revealed in Mecca after The All High (Al-A'alaa) before Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
I CALL THE night to witness when it covers over, 1 By the Day as it appears in glory; 2 And Him who created the male and female, 3 Your striving is most surely (directed to) various (ends). 4 As for him who giveth and is dutiful (toward Allah) 5 And believed the best matter to be true 6 We will pave his way to ease. 7 But as for him who is a miser, and self-sufficient, 8 and rejects what is right, 9 We shall pave his way to hardship, 10 And what will his wealth avail him when he falls? 11 BEHOLD, it is indeed for Us to grace [you] with guidance; 12 And verify Ours is both the Hereafter and the life present. 13 Therefor have I warned you of the flaming Fire 14 whereat none but the most wretched shall be roasted, 15 who rejected the Truth, calling it falsehood and turned his back on it. 16 One who fears God shall be kept away from it -- 17 even he who gives his wealth. to purify himself 18 not as payment for favours received, 19 but only out of a longing for the countenance of his Sustainer, the All-Highest: 20 Will surely be gratified. 21
Almighty God's Truth.
