We did send Moses aforetime, with Our Signs, to Pharaoh and his Chiefs: He said, "I am a messenger of the Lord of the Worlds." 46 Then when he came unto them with Our signs, behold! at them they were laughing. 47 And not an Ayah (sign, etc.) We showed them but it was greater than its fellow, and We seized them with torment, in order that they might turn [from their polytheism to Allah's Religion (Islamic Monotheism)]. 48 They said, "Magician, pray to your Lord for us through your covenant with Him (If he saves us from the torment), we shall certainly seek guidance". 49 But when We eased them of the torment, behold! they broke their word. 50 And Fir'awn proclaimed among his people, saying: O my people! is not mine the dominion of Misr and witness yonder rivers flowing underneath me? See ye not? 51 "Am I not better than this one [Musa (Moses)], who is Mahin [has no honour nor any respect, and is weak and despicable] and can scarcely express himself clearly? 52 Why have no armlets of gold been given him, or angels sent down successively with him' 53 So he made his people unsteady, and they obeyed him; surely they were an ungodly people. 54 So when they incurred Our wrath, We exacted retribution from them, and drowned them all, 55 And made them a precedent and example for posterity. 56
