A throng of the ancients 39 and a good many of later times. 40 The Companions of the Left Hand,- what will be the Companions of the Left Hand? 41 In scorching wind and scalding water 42 And in the shades of Black Smoke: 43 Neither cool nor honorable. 44 They had lived in luxury before this 45 and persisted in the Great Sin, 46 And they used to say, “When we are dead and have turned into dust and bones, will we surely be raised again?” 47 and perhaps, too, our forebears of old?" 48 (Muhammad), say, "All the ancient and later generations 49 shall be gathered together to the appointed time on a known Day' 50 Then you people who had gone astray and rejected the Truth 51 you shall eat of a tree called Zakkoum, 52 And shall fill therewith your bellies. 53 and will thereupon have to drink [many a draught] of burning despair 54 and you will drink as the lapping of thirsty camels. 55 Such will be their entertainment on the Day of Requital! 56 It is We who have created you. Why then did you not testify to the Truth? 57 Then tell Me (about) the human semen that you emit. 58 Is it you that create it or are We the creators? 59 We have ordained death among you and We are not to be overcome, 60 To transfigure you and create you in (forms) that you know not. 61 And assuredly ye have fully known the first production wherefore heed ye not? 62 Tell Me! The seed that you sow in the ground. 63 Is it you that make it grow, or are We the Grower? 64 If We so wished, We could have reduced your harvest to rubble, and you would have been left wonder-struck to exclaim: 65 crying, "We have been left to suffer loss. 66 Nay, but we have been deprived [of our livelihood]!" 67 Consider the water that you drink. 68 Is it ye who shed it from the raincloud, or are We the Shedder? 69 If We willed We verily could make it bitter. Why then, give ye not thanks? 70 So what is your opinion regarding the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it you who produced its tree, or are We the producer? 72 We have made it a reminder and an advantage for the wayfarers of the desert. 73 Then, exalt the Name of your Lord, the Great. 74
