a large throng from the ancients, 39 And a multitude of those (on the Right Hand) will be from the later times (generations). 40 Those on the Left: how unfortunate are those on the Left! 41 Amidst scorching wind and scalding water. 42 And in the shadow of a burning smoke. 43 Neither cool nor beneficial. 44 Indeed they were among favours before this. 45 and persisted in the great sin 46 And they used to say: What! when we die and have become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised? 47 Or our fathers of yore? 48 Say thou: verily the ancients and those of later generations: 49 Are to be gathered together for the appointment of a known Day." 50 Then you, the erring and the deniers, 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 And will fill your bellies therewith; 53 and on top of this you will drink boiling water 54 drinking it as thirsty camels do.” 55 That will be their entertainment on the Day of Recompense! 56 WE who have created you, [O men:] why, then, do you not accept the truth? 57 Have you seen that which you emit? 58 Is it you who create it (i.e. make this semen into a perfect human being), or are We the Creator? 59 We have incorporated death in your constitution, and We shall not be hindered 60 Had We so wished, nothing could have hindered Us from replacing you by others like yourselves, or transforming you into beings you know nothing about. 61 And you have already known the first creation, so will you not remember? 62 Have you considered the seeds you till? 63 Is it you who makes it grow, or are We the grower? 64 Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry pieces, and you would be regretful (or left in wonderment). 65 Surely we are burdened with debt: 66 Nay, but we have been deprived [of our livelihood]!" 67 Have you considered the water that you drink? 68 Did you send it down from the clouds, or did We send it? 69 [It comes down sweet - but] were it Our will, We could make it burningly salty and bitter: why, then, do you not give thanks [unto Us]? 70 Behold! the fire which ye strike out: 71 Produce ye the tree thereof, or are We the Producer? 72 We have made it a memorial (of Our handiwork), and an article of comfort and convenience for the denizens of deserts. 73 Then magnify the Name of thy Lord, the All-mighty. 74
