The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
O thou enveloped! 1 arise and warn, 2 Glorify your Lord, 3 And thine inner self purify! 4 And uncleanness do shun, 5 And do not through giving seek thyself to gain, 6 Exercise patience to please your Lord. 7 For when the trumpet is sounded, 8 That Day will be a difficult day 9 Dolorous for the unbelievers. 10 Leave him to Me whom I created alone, 11 whom I have endowed with abundant riches, 12 and sons standing before him, 13 And spread [everything] before him, easing [his life]. 14 Then he desires that I should add more. 15 By no means! For to Our Signs he has been refractory! 16 I will make a distressing punishment overtake him. 17 Verily, he thought and plotted; 18 (Self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! 19 Again, death seized him, how was his determining! 20 and then he looks [around for new arguments,] 21 Then frowned he and showed displeasure. 22 Then he turned back and was arrogant 23 and said, "This is nothing but sorcery from the ancients. 24 Naught is this but the word of Man. 25 I shall make him suffer the torment of hell. 26 and what will teach thee what is Sakar? 27 It does not allow anyone to live, and neither does it leave anyone to die; 28 it scorches the skin; 29 Over it are appointed nineteen. 30 We have appointed none but angels to guard the Fire, and made their number only as a trial for the unbelievers, so that those to whom the Book was given are certain and those who believe increase in belief. And that those who were given the Book, and those who believe will not be in doubt. And that those in whose hearts there is a sickness, together with the unbelievers, may say: 'What did Allah intend by this as an example' As such, Allah leaves in error whom He will and He guides whomsoever He will. None knows the hosts of your Lord except He. This is no more than a Reminder to humans. 31
