He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ He frowned and then turned away 1 from a blind man who had come up to him. 2 Yet for all thou didst know, [O Muhammad,] he might perhaps have grown in purity, 3 or have been reminded [of the truth,] and helped by this reminder. 4 As for him who considers himself free from need (of you), 5 to him didst thou give thy whole attention, 6 And not upon you [is any blame] if he will not be purified. 7 But as for him who cometh unto thee with earnest purpose 8 And he feareth 9 Him thou neglectest! 10 No indeed; this is only a Reminder. 11 and so, whoever is willing may remember Him 12 upon pages high-honoured, 13 most exalted and purified, 14 In the hands of scribes 15 Honourable and obedient. 16 Be cursed (the disbelieving) man! How ungrateful he is! 17 Of what thing hath He created him? 18 From a (sperm) drop He created him and then determined him, 19 then eased his path for him, 20 He will then send him to death and have him laid in the grave. 21 Then, when it is His Will, He will resurrect him (again). 22 Nay, but (man) has not done what He commanded him. 23 Then let man look at his food, 24 We poured water, pouring it in great abundance, 25 then We split the earth in fissures 26 We make the grain grow out of it, 27 together with grapes and vegetables, 28 and olive trees and date-palms, 29 And gardens, dense with many trees, 30 And fruits and Abba (herbage, etc.), 31 for you and for your animals to enjoy. 32 Then when cometh the Deafening Cry 33 That Day shall a man flee from his own brother, 34 And from his mother and his father, 35 And from his wife and sons. 36 Everyman, that Day, will have enough to make him careless of others. 37 Some faces will shine, 38 laughing, rejoicing at glad tidings. 39 And other faces, on that day, with dust upon them, 40 Dust shall cover them 41 Such will be the Rejecters of Allah, the doers of iniquity. 42
