The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 And the day when it shines in brightness, 2 And Him who created the male and female, 3 Verily, [O men,] you aim at most divergent ends! 4 Then as for him who gives away and guards (against evil), 5 and believes in the truth of the ultimate good 6 We shall surely ease him to the Path of Easing; 7 But he who is a greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient, 8 And who belieth the Good, 9 We shall surely ease for him the Path of Hardship (the Fire). 10 his wealth shall not avail him when he perishes. 11 Verify on us is the guidance 12 and to Us belong the Next Life and the present. 13 I therefore warn you of the fire that is ablaze. 14 None will [enter to] burn therein except the most wretched one. 15 Who denied (the truth) and turned away. 16 and from which the cautious shall be distanced. 17 Who gives away his wealth, purifying himself 18 And is under no one's obligation to return his favour, 19 acting only for the sake of his Lord the Most High -- 20 He will surely be well-pleased (with him). 21
