The Human (Al-Insan)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
Indeed, there came upon the human a period of time when he was an unremembered thing. 1 We created the human being from the union of sperm and egg to test him. We gave him hearing and vision. 2 Verily, We have shown him the way: [and it rests with him to prove himself] either grateful or ungrateful. 3 [Now,] behold, for those who deny the truth, We have prepared chains, iron collars and a blazing fire, but 4 [whereas,] behold, the truly virtuous shall drink from a cup flavoured with the calyx of sweet-smelling flowers: 5 A spring wherefrom the slaves of Allah will drink, causing it to gush forth abundantly. 6 The servants of God fulfill their vows and are afraid of the day in which there will be widespread terror. 7 And they give food, inspite of their love for it (or for the love of Him), to Miskin (poor), the orphan, and the captive, 8 (Saying),"We feed you for the sake of Allah alone: no reward do we desire from you, nor thanks. 9 for we fear from our Lord a stern, frownful Day' 10 So God has guarded them from the evil of that day, and has procured them radiancy and gladness, 11 And hath awarded them for all that they endured, a Garden and silk attire; 12 Reclining there upon couches, they shall see neither the sun nor the moon. 13 And close upon them will be the shades thereof, and low will hang the clusters thereof greatly. 14 And amongst them will be passed round vessels of silver and goblets of crystal,- 15 Glass made from silver, which the servers have filled up to the measure. 16 And they shall be given to drink from a cup whose mixture is ginger, 17 (Of) a fountain therein which is named Salsabil. 18 ۞ There boys of everlasting youth shall go about attending them: when you see them, you would think that they are scattered pearls. 19 And when thou lookest, it is there thou wilt see a Bliss and a Realm Magnificent. 20 Upon them there will be garments of green silk, rich brocade, and they will be adorned with bracelets of silver. Their Lord will give them a pure beverage to drink. 21 'See, this is your recompense, your striving is thanked' 22
