The Night (Al-Layl)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the night when it envelopeth, 1 And the day when it shines in all its glory, 2 Consider the creation of the male and the female! 3 Your striving is most surely (directed to) various (ends). 4 As for one who gives [to others] and fears [God], 5 And believes in the best [reward], 6 We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Bliss. 7 But he who is greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient. 8 And who belieth the Good, 9 for him shall We make easy the path towards hardship: 10 and what will his wealth avail him when he goes down [to his grave]? 11 Truly! Ours it is (to give) guidance, 12 And verify Ours is both the Hereafter and the life present. 13 Now I have warned you of a Fire that flames, 14 whereat none but the most wretched shall be roasted, 15 even he who cried lies, and turned away; 16 and from which the most godfearing shall be removed, 17 one who gives his wealth to become purified, 18 And have in their minds no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return, 19 acting only for the sake of his Lord the Most High -- 20 And indeed, soon he will be very pleased. 21
