The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ NAY! I call to witness this land 1 And you are free (from sin, to punish the enemies of Islam on the Day of the conquest) in this city (Makkah). 2 And by the begetter and that which he begat, 3 indeed, We created man in trouble. 4 Does he think that no one has power over him? 5 He will say: 'I have destroyed a vast wealth' 6 Does he then think that no one sees him? 7 Have We not made for him a pair of eyes? 8 a tongue, and two lips, 9 and shown him the two paths? 10 But he has made no effort to pass on the path that is steep. 11 And what will make you comprehend what the uphill road is? 12 (It is) Freeing a neck (slave, etc.) 13 Or the giving of food in a day of privation 14 To the orphan with claims of relationship, 15 Or a needy person in misery 16 And to be of those who believe, and urge upon one another to persevere, and urge upon each other to be kind. 17 Their place will be on the right hand. 18 and [as for] those who are bent on denying the truth of Our revelations, they are the people of the left hand, 19 On them is fire closed over. 20
