The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the Sun and his (glorious) splendour; 1 And the moon when she followeth him, 2 By the Day as it shows up (the Sun's) glory; 3 And by oath of the night when it hides it 4 and by the sky and by Him Who made it; 5 and the earth and all its expanse! 6 and by the soul and by Him Who perfectly proportioned it, 7 and how it is imbued with moral failings as well as with consciousness of God! 8 He will indeed be successful who purifies it, 9 And miserable is he who hath buried it. 10 In their presumptuous insolence the Thamud called the Truth a lie 11 when the most wicked of them broke forth, 12 And the apostle of God had to tell them: "This is God's she-camel, let her drink." 13 But they belied him, and hamstrung her. So their Lord crushed them for their sin and leveled it (their village). 14 He did not fear the consequences. 15
