The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
O you enveloped in your cloak! 1 Arise, and warn. 2 And your Lord glorify 3 And thy garments keep free from stain! 4 And all abomination shun! 5 do not bestow a favour in the expectation of receiving more in return; 6 And for the sake of your Lord, be patient. 7 Then when the horn shall be blown, 8 Surely that day will be a day of anguish, 9 Not of ease, for disbelievers. 10 Leave Me with the one I created alone 11 And then bestowed upon him ample means, 12 and sons to be by his side, 13 and for whom I have smoothed the way (to power and riches), 14 After all that he desires that I should give more; 15 No! Indeed, he has been toward Our verses obstinate. 16 I shall soon constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 For he had thought and calculated. 18 (Self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! 19 Yea, Woe to him; How he plotted!- 20 and then he looks [around for new arguments,] 21 frowned and scowled; 22 then he retreated and grew proud 23 Then he said: naught is this but magic from of old; 24 “This is nothing but the speech of a man.” 25 Anon shall I roast him into the Scorching Fire. 26 and what will teach thee what is Sakar? 27 It neither spares, nor releases, 28 scorching the flesh; 29 Over it are nineteen [powers]. 30 And We have appointed none but the angels to be wardens of the Fire. And their number we have made only a trial for those who disbelieve, so that those who are vouchsafed the Book may be convinced, and that those who believe may increase in faith, and that those who are vouchsafed the Book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the infidels may say: what meaneth Allah by this description! In this wise Allah sendeth astray whomsoever He will, and guideth whomsoever He will. And none knoweth the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but an admonition unto man. 31
