The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O you enveloped in your cloak! 1 arise and warn, 2 and magnify the glory of your Lord, 3 and purify your clothing, 4 and flee from the statues! 5 Do not bestow favours in expectation of return, 6 Exercise patience to please your Lord. 7 Finally, when the Trumpet is sounded, 8 that will surely be a hard day, 9 Not easy upon the disbelievers. 10 Leave Me and him whom I created alone, 11 And for whom I appointed wealth extended. 12 And sons always present by his side, 13 and made all things smooth for him; 14 After all that he desires that I should give more; 15 By no means! Verily he hath been unto Our signs a foe. 16 I will constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 For he had thought and calculated. 18 death seize him, how he determined! 19 Again, ruin seize him, how did he hatch a scheme? 20 and then he looks [around for new arguments,] 21 Then he frowned and scowled; 22 Then turned he back, and grew stiff-necked. 23 and said: 'This is no more than traced sorcery; 24 Nothing more than the speech of a man!" 25 I will surely roast him in the Scorching. 26 What could make you conceive what hell-fire is? 27 Naught doth it permit to endure, and naught doth it leave alone!- 28 and it burns the flesh. 29 Over it are nineteen [powers]. 30 We have not appointed the guards of hell, except angels; and did not keep this number except to test the disbelievers – in order that the People given the Book(s) may be convinced, and to increase the faith of the believers – and so that the People given the Book(s) and the Muslims may not have any doubt – and so that those in whose hearts is a disease and the disbelievers, may say, “What does Allah mean by this amazing example?” This is how Allah sends astray whomever He wills, and guides whomever He wills; and no one knows the armies of Allah except Him; and this is not but an advice to man. 31
