The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the night when it enshrouds, 1 and the day as it rises bright! 2 And the creating of the male and the female, 3 Verily your endeavour is diverse. 4 Thus, as for him who gives [to others] and is conscious of God, 5 And testifieth to the Good, 6 We will ease him toward ease. 7 And for him who hoarded wealth and remained carefree, 8 And denies the best [reward], 9 We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Misery; 10 When he falls (into Hell), his wealth will not help him. 11 Surely it is for Us to show the Right Way, 12 and, behold, Ours is [the dominion over] the life to come as well as [over] this earlier part [of your life]: 13 I therefore warn you of the fire that is ablaze. 14 in which no one will suffer forever except the wicked ones 15 who rejected the Truth, calling it falsehood and turned his back on it. 16 But save him who fears 17 And gives of his wealth that he may grow in virtue, 18 And not [giving] for anyone who has [done him] a favor to be rewarded 19 Except only the desire to seek the Countenance of his Lord, the Most High; 20 He verily will be content. 21
