a good many of olden times, 39 and a good many of later times. 40 As for the Companions of the Left 41 (they shall live) amid burning winds and boiling water, 42 in the shadow of a smoking blaze, 43 [shadows] neither cooling nor soothing. 44 For, behold, in times gone by they were wont to abandon themselves wholly to the pursuit of pleasures, 45 and had persisted in the Great Sin. 46 and constantly said: 'What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we then be restored to life? 47 We and our fathers of old? 48 Say thou: verily the ancients and those of later generations: 49 will be brought together for an appointment on an appointed day. 50 Then you, you misguided ones, who deny the truth, 51 Will eat of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 and fill your bellies with it, 53 And drinking on top of it from scalding water 54 You shall drink it as the thirsty camels drink." 55 This shall be their hospitality on the Day of Doom. 56 We created you; therefore why will you not believe? 57 Have you considered the seed? 58 Is it you who creates it, or are We the Creator? 59 It is We who have ordained death for all of you; and We cannot be prevented 60 in replacing you with another creation like you, changing you into a form which you do not know. 61 And ye certainly know already the first form of creation: why then do ye not celebrate His praises? 62 Tell Me! The seed that you sow in the ground. 63 Is it ye who foster it, or are We the Fosterer? 64 If We willed, surely We would make it chaff, so that ye would be left wondering. 65 “We have been penalised; 66 nay, we have been robbed!' 67 See ye the water which ye drink? 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds or We? 69 If We pleased, We would have made it salty; why do you not then give thanks? 70 Have ye observed the fire which ye strike out; 71 Is it you who have produced its tree or is it We who have produced it? 72 We have made it as a reminder of hell and as a utility for travellers in the jungle. 73 Therefore (O dear Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him) proclaim the Purity of the name of your Lord, the Greatest. 74
