The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
I swear by the sun and its brilliance, 1 and by the moon when she follows him, 2 And [by] the day when it displays it 3 by the night when it covers the earth with darkness, 4 The heavens and its architecture, 5 And by oath of the earth and by oath of Him Who spread it. 6 And [by] the soul and He who proportioned it 7 and inspired it with its sin and its piety, 8 He will indeed be successful who purifies it, 9 And he will indeed fail who corrupts it. 10 The Thamud tribe rejected the truth because of their arrogance, 11 when the most wicked of them broke forth, 12 Then the messenger of God said to them, "This is God's she-camel. Let her drink." 13 But they denied him, and they hamstrung her, so Allah doomed them for their sin and rased (their dwellings). 14 and He fears not the issue thereof. 15
