Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
Ha Mim! 1 By the Clear Book 2 We sent it (this Quran) down on a blessed night [(i.e. night of Qadr, Surah No: 97) in the month of Ramadan, the 9th month of the Islamic calendar]. Verily, We are ever warning [mankind that Our Torment will reach those who disbelieve in Our Oneness of Lordship and in Our Oneness of worship]. 3 During it are distributed all the works of wisdom. 4 By a command from Us – indeed it is We Who send. 5 A mercy from your Lord; indeed He only is the All Hearing, the All Knowing. 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them, if you would be certain. 7 There is no deity except Him; He gives life and causes death. [He is] your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers. 8 Nay! They play in doubt. 9 So watch for the day when the sky begins to emit clear smoke, 10 Enveloping the people: this will be a Penalty Grievous. 11 Lord, remove this torment from us for we are believers". 12 But how will they take heed? Such are they that a Messenger came to them clearly expounding the Truth, 13 then they turned away from him and said, 'A man tutored, possessed!' 14 If We remove the torment a little, you revert back (to misdeeds). 15 Upon the day when We shall assault most mightily, then We shall take Our vengeance. 16 ۞ We had tried the people of Pharaoh before them. A respected prophet had come to them (saying): 17 Saying: Give up to me the slaves of Allah. Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you. 18 And saying: Be not proud against Allah. Lo! I bring you a clear warrant. 19 “And I take the refuge of my Lord and yours, against your stoning me.” 20 If you do not believe in me, leave me alone." 21 Then he called upon his Lord: “These are a criminal people.” 22 (He was told): “Set out with My servants by night for you will certainly be pursued. 23 Then leave the sea calm they are an army that will be drowned. 24 How many gardens did they leave behind, and how many fountains 25 And corn-fields and noble buildings, 26 And the delights which they had been enjoying! 27 As such (it was). And We made other people inherit them. 28 And neither heaven nor earth shed a tear over them: nor were they given a respite (again). 29
