The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Read in the name of your Lord Who created. 1 Created man from a clinging substance. 2 Read: And thy Lord is the Most Bounteous, 3 Who taught by the pen - 4 Taught man that which he knew not. 5 No! [But] indeed, man transgresses 6 because he thinks that he is independent. 7 Lo! unto thy Lord is the return. 8 HAST THOU ever considered him who tries to prevent 9 A slave when he prayeth? 10 What is your opinion – if he were upon guidance, 11 or bade to godfearing -- 12 What is your opinion – if he denies and turns away, how wretched will be his state! 13 Knoweth he not that Allah beholdeth? 14 Nay! if he desist not, We would certainly smite his forehead, 15 A forelock, lying, sinning. 16 So let him summon his helpmates; 17 We will call the guards of Hell (to deal with him)! 18 Nay! obey him not, and make obeisance and draw nigh (to Allah). ۩ 19
