In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Kaf Ha Ya Ain Sad 1 [This is] a mention of the mercy of your Lord to His servant Zechariah 2 when he called upon his Lord secretly 3 saying, 'O my Lord, behold the bones within me are feeble and my head is all aflame with hoariness. And in calling on Thee, my Lord, I have never been hitherto unprosperous. 4 now I fear my kinsmen when I am gone. [I have no hope of their continuing my mission] for my wife is barren, so grant me a successor from Yourself, 5 to be my heir and to be the heir [of the blessings] of the House of Jacob; and make him, O my Lord, acceptable to you." 6 'O Zachariah, We give you good tidings of a son, and he shall be called John (Yahya); a name We have never given before' 7 He said, "My Lord, how will I have a boy when my wife has been barren and I have reached extreme old age?" 8 He (the angel) said, “So it is; your Lord says, ‘This is easy for Me in fact I created you before this, at a time when you did not exist.’” 9 He said, “My Lord, give me a sign”; He said, “Your token is that you will not speak to people for three nights, although in proper health.” 10 Then Zachariah came forth from the shrine to his people and told them by signs to glorify the Lord morning and evening. 11 "O John! Hold the Book with all your strength." We had bestowed wisdom upon him while he was still a child; 12 And (made him) sympathetic to men as a mercy (or a grant) from Us, and pure from sins [i.e. Yahya (John)] and he was righteous, 13 And dutiful towards his parents, and he was neither an arrogant nor disobedient (to Allah or to his parents). 14 Peace on him the day he was born, and the day he dieth and the day he shall be raised alive! 15
