Thamud denied the messengers 141 Their brother Salih said to them: 'Will you not be cautious? 142 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 143 "So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 'I ask of you no wage for this; my wage falls only upon the Lord of all Being. 145 Will you be left secure in this, 146 amidst gardens and fountains, 147 And corn-fields and palm-trees whereof the spathes are fine? 148 And dwellings hewed out of mountains ingeniously? 149 So fear Allah and obey me. 150 and obey not the commandment of the prodigal 151 those who spread corruption on earth instead of setting things to rights!" 152 Said they: "Thou art but one of the bewitched! 153 Thou art nothing but a mortal like ourselves! Come, then, forward with a token [of thy mission] if thou art a man of truth!" 154 He said, "This is a she-camel. She will have her share of water as you have your share, each on a certain day. 155 Do not molest her lest the chastisement of an Awesome Day should seize you." 156 But they hamstrung her; and on the morrow were repentant, 157 So the chastisement seized them. Surely there is a Sign in this, but most of them would not believe. 158 But, verily, thy Sustainer - He alone - is almighty, a dispenser of grace! 159
