a large throng from the ancients, 39 And a crowd of the later. 40 But those of the left hand -- how (unhappy) those of the left hand -- 41 [They will be] in scorching fire and scalding water 42 And shadow of black smoke, 43 Nothing (will there be) to refresh, nor to please: 44 Indeed they were among favours before this. 45 And they used to persist in the great violation, 46 And they used to say, “When we are dead and have turned into dust and bones, will we surely be raised again?” 47 "(We) and our fathers of old?" 48 Proclaim, “Without doubt all – the former and the latter.” 49 "All will surely be gathered together for appointed Meeting of a known Day. 50 Then shall you, O you who err and call it a lie! 51 Will be eating from trees of zaqqum 52 "Then you will fill your bellies therewith, 53 and drink on top of that boiling water 54 You shall drink it as the thirsty camels drink." 55 Such will be their welcome on Judgment Day! 56 We! it is We Who created you: wherefore confess ye not? 57 Have you considered the seed you spill? 58 Did you create it, or are We the Creator? 59 We have decreed death among you, and We are not to be outdone 60 In order that We may bring in your place the likes of you and make you grow into what you know not. 61 And you have already known the first creation, so will you not remember? 62 Behold! that which ye sow. 63 Do you yourselves sow it, or are We the Sowers? 64 If We so pleased, We could turn your harvest into chaff. Then you would start lamenting, 65 “We have been penalised; 66 Rather, we have been prevented' 67 So what is your opinion regarding the water that you drink? 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds, or are We the senders? 69 Did We will, We would make it bitter; so why are you not thankful? 70 Have you thought about the fire that you kindle. 71 Is it you that originated its tree, or are We the Originator? 72 It is We who have made it as a reminder and a means of comfort for the people. 73 So glorify the name of your Lord, the Supreme. 74
