The Town (Al-Balad)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ I CALL THIS earth to witness -- 1 and you are dwelling in this city -- 2 And by the begetter and that which he begat, 3 Verily We have created man into toil and hardship. 4 Does he think that none has power over him! 5 He says (boastfully): "I have wasted wealth in abundance!" 6 Thinks he that none sees him? 7 Have We not made for him two eyes 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 And showed him two highways (of good and evil)? 10 But he has not attempted the ascent. 11 And what will explain to thee the path that is steep?- 12 (It is:) freeing the bondman; 13 And to feed in the day of hunger. 14 to an orphan near of kin; 15 Or to the indigent (down) in the dust. 16 Then he is of those who believe and charge one another to show patience, and charge one another to show compassion. 17 Such are the Companions of the Right Hand. 18 But those who disbelieved in Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.), they are those on the Left Hand (the dwellers of Hell). 19 Upon them is a fire, in which they are imprisoned, closed and shut above them. 20
