The Thamud belied the sent ones 141 Their brother Salih asked them, "Why do you not fear God? 142 Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger. 143 So fear Allah and obey me. 144 And I ask of you no wage therefor; my wage is the concern only of the Lord of the Worlds. 145 "Will ye be left secure, in (the enjoyment of) all that ye have here? 146 amidst the gardens, springs, 147 And fields of crops and palm trees with softened fruit? 148 Will you still hew your dwellings in the mountains? 149 So fear Allah, and obey me. 150 Do not follow those who are extravagant, 151 "Who make mischief in the land, and mend not (their ways)." 152 They said: "You are only of those bewitched! 153 Thou art but a mortal like us. So bring some token if thou art of the truthful. 154 He said, "This is a she-camel. She will have her share of water as you have your share, each on a certain day. 155 and do not touch her with malice so that there seize you the chastisement of a dreadful day.' 156 But they hamstrung her, and then were penitent. 157 For they were seized by the torment. Verily there was a sign in this, but most of them did not believe. 158 And verily thy Lord! He is the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
