The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
By the Star when it goes down,- 1 Your Companion is neither astray nor being misled. 2 nor does he speak out of his desire. 3 It is no less than inspiration sent down to him: 4 taught by One who is Stern in power. 5 One vigorous; and he grew clear to view 6 And reached the highest pinnacle. 7 Then he drew nigh and came down 8 And was at a distance of two bow lengths or nearer. 9 and revealed to God's servant what he revealed. 10 The heart [of the Prophet] did not misconstrue what he saw. 11 Will ye therefore dispute with him concerning that which he hath seen? 12 And indeed, he saw him a second time 13 Near the lote-tree of the last boundary. 14 Near it is the Paradise of Abode. 15 when there covered the Lote-Tree that which covered; 16 [And withal,] the eye did not waver, nor yet did it stray: 17 for indeed he saw one of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 (Among the idols) have you considered allat and al'uzza, 19 And Manat, the third, the last? 20 Is the male for you and for Him the female? 21 This is an unfair distinction! 22 They are but names which ye have named, ye and your fathers, for which Allah hath sent down no authority. They follow but their fancy, and that which pleaseth their souls; whereas assuredly there hath come unto them from their Lord the guidance. 23 Nay, shall man have (just) anything he hankers after? 24 To God belong the End and the Beginning. 25
