(The tribe of) Thamud denied the messengers (of Allah) 141 When their brother Salih said to them, "Will you not fear God? 142 Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you, 143 so fear you God, and obey you me.' 144 "And no reward whatever do I ask of you for it: my reward rests with none but the Sustainer of all the worlds. 145 Will you be left in what is here, secure [from death], 146 in the midst of gardens and fountains, 147 sown fields and palmtrees, with slender spathes. 148 "And you carve houses out of mountains with great skill. 149 Have fear of God and obey me. 150 And do not obey the order of the transgressors, 151 "Who make mischief in the land, and reform not." 152 They said, 'Thou art merely one of those that are bewitched; 153 Thou art but a human being like unto us. So bring thou a sign if thou art of the truth-tellers. 154 He said: 'Here is a shecamel. She shall have her share of water as you have yours on an appointed day. 155 Do not molest her lest the chastisement of an Awesome Day should seize you." 156 Then they hamstrung her; and then they became regretful. 157 so the punishment came down upon them. Surely in that there is a sign, but most of them would not believe. 158 And most surely your Lord is the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
