The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A caller supplicated about a punishment to fall on 1 Upon the disbelievers, which none can avert, 2 a chastisement from Allah, the Lord of the ascending steps, 3 To Him ascend the angels and the Spirit in a day the measure of which is fifty thousand years. 4 So persevere with becoming patience. 5 They surely take it to be far away, 6 And We behold it nigh. 7 On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, 8 And the mountains will be like wool, 9 and [when] no friend will ask about his friend, 10 Though within sight of one another. The sinner would like to ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his sons, 11 And his wife and his brother 12 his kinsmen who gave him refuge (from hardship) 13 and whosoever is in the earth, altogether, so that it might save him. 14 By no means! It will be the fierce flame 15 stripping away his skin, 16 calling him who drew back and turned away, 17 And hoarded (wealth) and withheld it. 18 ۞ Indeed, man is born impatient: 19 when evil visits him, impatient, 20 And niggardly when good reaches him;- 21 But not so the worshippers 22 and constant in their prayers. 23 those who give a due share of their wealth 24 to those who ask [for help] and to the destitute; 25 And those who believe in the Day of Recompense 26 and fear the chastisement of their Lord – 27 Indeed the punishment of their Lord is not a thing to be unafraid of! 28 And those who preserve their chastity 29 except from their spouses and those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock], for which they incur no blame -- 30 but any who seeks to go beyond that, it is indeed they who are the transgressors, 31 and who preserve their trusts and their covenant, 32 and those who are upright in their testimonies; 33 and who take due care of their Prayer: 34 These will dwell in Gardens, honoured. 35
