A large group from the earlier generations. 39 And a (goodly) number from those of later times. 40 As for the people on the left hand, how miserable they will be! 41 They will live amid the scorching, 42 and a shade of thick, pitch-black smoke, 43 neither cool, neither goodly; 44 Verily they have been heretofore affluent. 45 and persisted in the great sin 46 They used to say: “What! Once we are dead and are reduced to dust and bones, shall we still be raised to a new life from the dead? 47 And also our forefathers?" 48 Say thou: verily the ancients and those of later generations: 49 Are to be gathered together for the appointment of a known Day." 50 Then you, the erring ones and those that gave the lie to the Truth, 51 will eat from the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 "Then will ye fill your insides therewith, 53 And thereon ye will drink of boiling water, 54 Drinkers even as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 This is their reception on the Day of Justice. 56 We created you; therefore why will you not believe? 57 Have you seen that which you emit? 58 Do you make a human out of it, or is it We Who create? 59 We have [indeed] decreed that death shall be [ever-present] among you: but there is nothing to prevent Us 60 That We may substitute others like unto you and produce you into that which ye know not. 61 And you have already known the first creation, so will you not remember? 62 Ponder upon the soil you till, 63 Is it you that make it grow, or are We the Grower? 64 If We so wished, We could have reduced your harvest to rubble, and you would have been left wonder-struck to exclaim: 65 "We are ruined, 66 Nay! we are deprived. 67 Have you ever considered the water which you drink? 68 Do you send it down from the clouds, or We send it down? 69 [It comes down sweet - but] were it Our will, We could make it burningly salty and bitter: why, then, do you not give thanks [unto Us]? 70 Have you thought about the fire that you kindle. 71 Is it ye who grow the tree which feeds the fire, or do We grow it? 72 We have made it as a reminder and convenience for the needy. 73 So glorify the name of your Lord, the Supreme. 74
