A throng of the ancients 39 and a throng of the later folk. 40 But those of the left hand -- how (unhappy) those of the left hand -- 41 [They will find themselves] in the midst of scorching winds, and burning despair, 42 And shadow of black smoke, 43 which will neither be cool nor soothing. 44 Indeed they were, before that, indulging in affluence, 45 and persisted in heinous sins. 46 And they used to say, "What! when we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised up again?- 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients' 48 Say: "Yea, those of old and those of later times, 49 "All will certainly be gathered together for the meeting appointed for a Day well-known. 50 Then you erring ones, you that cried lies, 51 Will be eating from trees of zaqqum 52 "Then will ye fill your insides therewith, 53 and thereupon you shall drink boiling water, 54 You shall drink it as the thirsty camels drink." 55 This is their entertainment on the day of requital. 56 We created you. Will ye then admit the truth? 57 Have you considered the seed you spill? 58 Do you make a human out of it, or is it We Who create? 59 It is We Who ordained death upon you and We are not to be frustrated. 60 In order that We may bring in your place the likes of you and make you grow into what you know not. 61 You have known the first creation, then why do you not reflect? 62 Have you considered the soil you till? 63 Is it you that make it grow, or are We the Grower? 64 If We pleased, We should have certainly made it broken down into pieces, then would you begin to lament: 65 (And say:) "We have fallen into debt; 66 Nay! we are deprived. 67 Consider the water that you drink. 68 Do ye bring it down (in rain) from the cloud or do We? 69 If We so pleased, We certainly could make it salty. Why, then, are you not grateful? 70 Did you consider the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it you who have brought into being the tree that serves as its fuel - or are We the cause of its coming into being? 72 We Ourselves made it for a reminder, and a boon to the desert-dwellers. 73 Therefore glorify the name of your Lord, the Great. 74
