a large group of the earlier people 39 and many from the later generations. 40 And the companions of the left - what are the companions of the left? 41 In scorching wind and scalding water 42 and the shadows of black smoke 43 (That shadow) neither cool, nor (even) good, 44 They were endowed with good things 45 and would persist in heinous sinning, 46 And they used to say, "When we die and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected? 47 And also our forefathers?" 48 Proclaim, "Without doubt all - the former and the latter." 49 shall be gathered together to the appointed time on a known Day' 50 Then verily ye, O ye erring, denying people. 51 you shall eat of a tree called Zakkoum, 52 "Then you will fill your bellies therewith, 53 and thereupon you shall drink boiling water, 54 drinking it as thirsty camels do.” 55 That is their accommodation on the Day of Recompense. 56 We have created you, why do you not then assent? 57 Have you thought about what (sperm) you ejaculate? 58 Is it you who create it - or are We the source of its creation? 59 We mete out death among you, and We are not to be outrun, 60 that We may exchange the likes of you, and make you to grow again in a fashion you know not. 61 And indeed, you have already known the first form of creation (i.e. the creation of Adam), why then do you not remember or take heed? 62 Ponder upon the soil you till, 63 Is it ye who foster it, or are We the Fosterer? 64 If We so wished, We could have reduced your harvest to rubble, and you would have been left wonder-struck to exclaim: 65 (Saying:) 'We are laden with debts! 66 Rather, we have been deprived." 67 Have you ever considered the water which you drink? 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds or is it We Who brought it down? 69 We could make it brackish, if We pleased; so why do you not acknowledge thanks? 70 Have ye observed the fire which ye strike out; 71 Is it ye who grow the tree which feeds the fire, or do We grow it? 72 We have made it as a reminder of hell and as a utility for travellers in the jungle. 73 Then magnify the Name of thy Lord, the All-mighty. 74
