A (goodly) number from those of old, 39 And a multitude of those (on the Right Hand) will be from the later times (generations). 40 And the fellows on the left hand; how miserable shall the fellows on the left hand be! 41 [They will find themselves] in the midst of scorching winds, and burning despair, 42 And in the shades of Black Smoke: 43 Neither cool nor pleasant. 44 They were endowed with good things 45 And persisted obstinately in wickedness supreme! 46 And they used to say, "When we die and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected? 47 And our forefathers [as well]?" 48 Say: "Yea, those of old and those of later times, 49 shall be gathered together to the appointed time on a known Day' 50 Then you, the erring ones and those that gave the lie to the Truth, 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 Fill your bellies with it, 53 And thereon ye will drink of boiling water, 54 Drinking the way thirsty camels drink. 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Requital. 56 We have created you, why do you not then assent? 57 Then tell Me (about) the human semen that you emit. 58 Did you create it or was it We who created it? 59 We mete out death among you, and We are not to be outrun, 60 from replacing you by others like yourselves or changing your forms and re-creating you in forms that you know nothing of. 61 And you have indeed learnt about the first creation, so why do you not ponder? 62 So what is your opinion regarding what you sow? 63 Is it you that cause it to grow, or are We the causers of growth? 64 If We pleased, We should have certainly made it broken down into pieces, then would you begin to lament: 65 Surely we are burdened with debt: 66 "Nay, but we are deprived!" 67 Consider the water that you drink. 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds or We? 69 [It comes down sweet - but] were it Our will, We could make it burningly salty and bitter: why, then, do you not give thanks [unto Us]? 70 Did you consider the fire which you kindle? 71 Did you make its timber to grow, or did We make it? 72 We have made it a memorial (of Our handiwork), and an article of comfort and convenience for the denizens of deserts. 73 Therefor (O Muhammad), praise the name of thy Lord, the Tremendous. 74
