Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the dawn 1 and the ten nights! 2 and the even and the odd, 3 and by the night when it departs. 4 There is indeed in them (the above oaths) sufficient proofs for men of understanding (and that, they should avoid all kinds of sins and disbeliefs, etc.)! 5 Have you not seen what your Lord did to the 'Ad 6 of the columned (city) of Iram, 7 The like of which was not created in the lands; 8 And the tribe of Thamud, who hewed rocks in the valley. 9 And with Fir'awn, owner of the stakes 10 who all were insolent in the land 11 and worked much corruption therein? 12 Thy Lord unloosed on them a scourge of chastisement; 13 Verily, your Lord is Ever Watchful (over them). 14 So man, whenever his Lord tests him by giving him honour and favours – thereupon he says, “My Lord has honoured me.” 15 And when He proveth him, and so stinteth unto him his provision, he saith: 'my Lord hath despised me. 16 No! But you do not honor the orphan 17 And urge not on the feeding of the poor. 18 and greedily devour the entire inheritance, 19 and you have a love of wealth which can never be satisfied. 20 No! When the earth has been leveled - pounded and crushed - 21 and (when you find yourself) in the presence of your Lord and the rows and rows of angels, your greed for riches will certainly be of no avail to you. 22 And Hell, that Day, is brought (face to face),- on that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance profit him? 23 He will say: 'Would that I had forwarded (good works) for my life!' 24 On that Day no one will punish as He punishes, 25 And none will bind as He will bind. 26 O satisfied soul, 27 return unto thy Lord, well-pleased, well-pleasing! 28 "Enter then among My votaries, 29 Enter thou My Garden! 30
